What is Sketchbook B?

I believe in using a sketchbook to quickly work through design issues. As I sketch, I often think of other - often unrelated concepts - and sketch or write them in the margin. At some point, I realized that these additional concepts were getting lost and never being developed. So I created Sketchbook B.

Sketchbook B’s objective is to work through creative concepts outside the traditional client framework. Often, with little or no budget. This forces creativity in implementation and allows for informal collaboration with other creatives.

Sketchbook B is not a “freelance” business… Instead, everything is typically done pro bono. The goal is to develop a creative and effective solution and to grow as a designer in the process.

What types of projects will Sketchbook B handle?

Really, I’m open to tackling just about anything. My main focus is type design, poster design and experimental production methods. And I’m looking for opportunities to expand my photography and illustration skills. But I’m always looking for projects that will challenge me as a creative.

I’m also focusing on cultivating my writing skills. I was trained primarily as a writer in college. But once I started working as a designer, opportunities to write became few and far between.

What won’t I cover?

The only topic off limits is the day job. The point of Sketchbook B is to focus those creative ideas that are outside the normal, everyday client relationship.

About Bob.

Bob Wertz is a graphic designer and art director living in Columbia, SC. In addition to working as designer, Bob is also an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina. He was a founding member of the AIGA South Carolina board, serving as vice president for two years and then as president for two years. As father of two girls, he is learning to embrace the color pink. As a South Carolina grad, he will never truely embrace the color orange.
